Derek began his cycling career as a BMX racer in the 1980’s. He also had a role in the manufacturing side of the cycling industry by helping to develop and test products that contributed to the evolution of the sport and its technological advancement. Derek is on the USA Cycling board of trustees and is dedicated to the progression of the sport. He currently races professionally in XC, Super-D, CycloCross and Downhill, and was inducted into the Big Bear Mt.Bike Hall of Fame in 2008, gaining recognition as a leader and avid supporter of the mountain biking community. Derek became president of Team Bear Valley Bikes in 2000 and led them to win the Rim Nordic Series “team of the decade” in 2010.
Paul has been competing since 1994 and races Cross Country in Cat1. He is from Running Springs, CA and his favorite place to race is Rim Nordic. When asked about his racing achievements, he answered “How about becoming tenacious, becoming driven, enhancing confidence, yet learning humility. Oh yeah, almost forgot. I even got to stand in the middle of the podium a few times.”
Steve has been competing his whole life in the “main stream sports” and played 4 years of high level NCAA scholarship experience in both Wrestling and Football. After a knee injury in the Army and eventual knee replacement, he began riding bikes for exercise. 7 years ago he met Derek at the Rim Nordic series, and has been a part of the team ever since. Steve races in Cat 2 in both Cross Country and Super D. In 2004 he won the Triple Crown Series in CAT3. Steve advanced to CAT2 in 2005 and always finishes in the top 3 at Rim Nordic. In the So Cal State series, he has remained in the top 5 in the state. In 7 years of racing he has only had one DNF due to a broken chain. Steve’s favorite races are Sage Brush Classic, Rim Nordic and Sea Otter.

Stuart is a High School English teacher from Corona, CA and has a background in running cross country and track. He began racing mountain bikes in 2000 and has been competing in Cat 1 since 2004. He joined the Bear Valley Bikes race team in 2010 and was proud to wear our kit when he placed 10th in Warrior’s Society Traverse. In 2006 Stuart came 3rd in the USA cycling national championships. In 2006 and 2007 he was 2nd on overall points in the NMBS and then became the overall points champion in 2008.
Mark has been a long time recreational mountain bike rider for 25 years, While working the finish line at Rim Nordic for 3 years he kept wondering if he could possibly keep up with those guys. After a few successful Super Ds and a trial XC race at Rim Nordic; Mark decided at age 60 it was time to go for it. With the help of Derek and the Bear Valley Bikes staff, Mark got set up with a new Specialized 29er, and finished first in all 3 Kenda Cup races he entered, and all the XC and Super D races at Rim Nordic for the Cat. 2 60-64 age class in 2011. Feeling he was more closely matched to the Cat. 1 60-64 competitors, he stepped up to Cat. 1 for the Rim Nordic Autumn Cup, finishing first. Mark finished off 2011 at the Specialized Cup State Championship with a 2nd place finish. Mark is hoping to get through winter in better shape than last year so he is ready to compete with the youngsters in 2013.
Born in upstate NY and moved to SoCal in 1993 after college. Steve resides in Torrance but has a place in Moonridge and comes up frequently in the summer with the family. Started riding in 1995 after his volleyball career ended from a torn rotator cup and began competing in 2002. Raced on and off since then, in between having kids, coaching youth sports, and traveling for business. Took 3rd in Clydesdale Sport 34 and under in 2003 and won the state championship the following year in the same XC category. Now Steve enjoys the simplicity of his steel single speed and is having a good time with the challenge of racing that bike in the Cat 2 SS category.
